Many people imagine that opting for cloth nappies involves old fashioned terry squares, sharp pins and complicated folding manouveres! But cloth nappies also referred to as
real nappies, reusable nappies, cotton nappies or washable nappies have moved on! The nappies look a lot like disposables – they are shaped and secured with Velcro or poppers. Gone are the dreadful plastic pants too– wraps are super soft and come in a range of funky, cool designs and colours!

Cloth nappies are amazingly easy to use, cost a fraction of the cost of disposables, are much more environmentally friendly and most importantly they are a safer and healthier choice for your baby. If you’d like to know more about disposables, what’s in them and their environmental impact please take a look at benefits.

I got into cloth nappies when I had my son in the UK. Initially I made the decision to use cloth because of environmental and financial factors. I couldn’t stand the thought of all the rubbish going into landfill sites and constantly shelling out for disposables was infuriating. I did a little research into disposables and was so shocked I immediately switched to cloth. I soon fell in love with cloth – they are soft, cuddly, the colours are so cute and they work! I am not alone – hundreds of families are addicted to cloth! My husband and I moved back to Cape Town in November 2004 and I was really shocked to see how many children were in disposables and how few cloth nappy choices were out there. My nappies and wraps are imported from the UK – I have used all these nappies, I know they work and they have won numerous awards to boot. They may initially appear slightly more expensive (the Rand is not helping me at the moment!!) but when you look at how much you will be saving over the average two and a half years your child will be in nappies, you probably won't need much more convincing!

If you can’t afford to buy a whole stack on nappies straight away, buy a few each month of your pregnancy. I am quite happy to keep nappies and combine to save postage costs.
